Shopify gives you several ways to track conversions, and using more than one for the same platform is the most common cause of inflated numbers. Choose one method per platform and test it end to end.
Start with the official channels
- Google & YouTube app connects Google Ads and GA4, sends ecommerce events and supports enhanced conversions
- Facebook & Instagram app connects the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API; set data sharing to the highest level your privacy setup allows
For many stores these two apps cover the essentials. Turn them on, then check that no other app or theme code sends the same events again.
Customer events and custom pixels
Shopify’s checkout runs in a protected environment where old-style scripts no longer run. For anything beyond the official apps, use Settings → Customer events to add a custom pixel. Custom pixels subscribe to Shopify’s standard events such as page_viewed, product_added_to_cart, checkout_started and checkout_completed.
analytics.subscribe('checkout_completed', (event) => {
const c = event.data.checkout;
// forward c.order.id, c.totalPrice.amount, c.currencyCode
// to your tag of choice
});
Custom pixels run in a sandbox, so test them with the pixel helper and the platforms’ own debugging tools.
Additional scripts are being retired
If your store still relies on code in the order status page “additional scripts” field, plan to move it to customer events. Shopify is phasing out that approach as stores move to checkout extensibility.
Google Ads
- Use the Google & YouTube app’s purchase conversion as your primary conversion
- Turn on enhanced conversions in the app
- Make sure there is not also a manually added Google Ads purchase tag
Meta
- Use the Facebook & Instagram app for both Pixel and Conversions API
- In Events Manager, check that
Purchaseshows both browser and server with deduplication - Check Event Match Quality and the purchase value matches Shopify’s order totals
GA4
Connect GA4 through the Google & YouTube app or a custom pixel, not both. Compare GA4 purchase revenue with Shopify’s sales report weekly; a big gap usually means duplicate or missing purchase events.
Common problems
- Purchases counted twice: an app plus a custom pixel or old additional scripts
- Wrong values: tax and shipping included in one place and excluded in another
- Missing purchases: a third-party checkout or upsell app that skips the standard events
Shopify tracking reviews are part of conversion tracking and web analytics.
