Meta offers two ways to send website events: the Meta Pixel, which runs in the visitor’s browser, and the Conversions API (CAPI), which sends events from a server. They are not competitors. Most advertisers get the best results using both.
The Meta Pixel
The Pixel is JavaScript on your website. When someone views a page, submits a form or buys, the browser sends that event to Meta.
Strengths
- Quick to install
- Captures browser context such as the
_fbpand_fbccookies used for matching
Weaknesses
- Ad blockers and browser privacy features can stop it
- Events are lost if the page closes before the request finishes
The Conversions API
CAPI sends events from your server (or a server-side GTM container) directly to Meta.
Strengths
- Not affected by ad blockers in the same way
- Can include events that happen off the website, such as a lead qualified in your CRM
- Gives you control over exactly which data is sent
Weaknesses
- Needs a server, a platform integration or server-side GTM
- Without good customer information parameters (hashed email, phone,
fbp, fbc, IP and user agent), match quality is low
Why run both
Each method fills the other’s gaps. The browser has cookie context; the server has reliability. Running both gives Meta the most complete view, which usually improves Event Match Quality and reported conversions.
The catch: the same lead now arrives twice. Meta handles this with deduplication, matching browser and server events that share the same event name and event_id. Read how Meta CAPI deduplication works to set it up correctly.
Ways to add CAPI
- Platform integrations: Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix offer built-in or app-based CAPI
- Server-side GTM, for example on Stape.io
- Direct API calls from your own backend, common on custom and Laravel sites
How to check your setup
In Events Manager, look at each event’s integration column (browser, server or both), the deduplication status and Event Match Quality. Use Test Events to confirm a test lead arrives once from each source and is marked as deduplicated.
