Cheap leads from Meta are easy to get. Leads that answer the phone and book a job are harder. If your sales team says “half these people never asked for a quote”, here is what to change.
1. Change the form type
In instant form settings, switch from More volume to Higher intent. People see a review screen and confirm their details before submitting. Volume usually drops, but accidental and low-effort sign-ups drop more.
2. Ask qualifying questions
Add custom questions that a casual tapper will not bother with:
- Which service do you need? (multiple choice)
- What is your postcode or area?
- When do you need it? (this week, this month, just researching)
You can also include a short-answer question. Each extra step lowers volume and raises intent; find the balance that suits your sales capacity.
3. Be clear about the offer
Vague ads attract vague leads. State the service, the area and what happens next: “Free same-day quote for end-of-tenancy cleaning in Manchester. We’ll call you within an hour.”
4. Stop optimising for the cheapest form fill
If your campaign optimises for “Leads” and nothing else, Meta looks for people likely to submit forms, not people likely to buy. Two ways to change that:
- Website leads with the Conversions API, so Meta sees a confirmed submission on your site
- Conversion leads optimisation, where you send lead stages from your CRM (for example “qualified” or “booked”) back to Meta, so delivery shifts toward people who become customers
Both depend on reliable tracking. See how Meta CAPI deduplication works if you send events from both browser and server.
5. Check the placements
Review results by placement. If a placement brings many leads but few bookings, test excluding it, or compare a campaign with and without it.
6. Follow up fast and consistently
Many “bad leads” are good leads contacted too late. Connect forms to your CRM or inbox instantly, call within minutes where possible, and follow up more than once by phone, SMS and email.
7. Feed results back
Once a week, mark leads in your CRM as qualified, booked or junk. Look for patterns by ad, form and audience, and move budget toward what produces booked jobs rather than what produces the lowest cost per lead.
If you want the whole funnel reviewed, a Meta Ads audit checks forms, optimisation events, CAPI and follow-up together.
