Google Ads and Meta Ads both generate leads for local service businesses, but they do it in different ways. Choosing well depends on how people find a business like yours.
The core difference: intent
Google Ads shows your ad when someone searches for your service. They already know what they need. You are capturing existing demand.
Meta Ads shows your ad to people in your area while they scroll. Most were not looking for you. You are creating demand.
Side by side
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer intent | High, actively searching | Lower, interrupted while scrolling |
| Best for | Urgent and planned services people search for | Visual services, offers, seasonal pushes |
| Cost per click | Often higher | Often lower |
| Cost per lead | Varies; often higher but better quality | Can be lower; quality varies more |
| Lead capture | Calls and website forms | Instant forms or website |
| Main tracking needs | Google tag, conversions, call tracking | Pixel, Conversions API, deduplication |
When to start with Google Ads
- Customers search when they need you: repairs, emergencies, removals, cleaning before a move
- Phone calls are your main way of booking jobs
- You can handle enquiries quickly during working hours
When Meta Ads makes sense
- Your service is visual: landscaping, renovations, detailing, cleaning
- You have an offer or seasonal angle to promote
- Search volume for your service in your area is small
- You want to stay in front of people who visited your website (retargeting)
Using both together
For many local businesses the strongest setup is Google for high-intent searches plus Meta for retargeting and demand creation in the same area. The two support each other: someone sees a Meta ad, later searches your name on Google, and books.
That only works if tracking is consistent across both. If each platform claims the same lead, budget decisions get distorted. Set up GA4 and GTM as the neutral source of truth and compare platform numbers against it.
Where to begin
If you are unsure, start with the channel your customers already use to find businesses like yours, track it properly, and add the second once the first is profitable. A short strategy call can help you decide based on your service area and budget.
