Why Google Ads Get Clicks but No Leads

By Hira Ads Pro·3 min read·October 12, 2026

“We’re getting clicks but the phone isn’t ringing” is the most common thing local businesses say about Google Ads. Clicks without leads almost always come from one of five places. Work through them in this order.

1. The searches are wrong

Open Insights and reports → Search terms and read the last 30 days line by line. You are looking for:

  • Job seekers: “cleaner jobs”, “HVAC technician salary”
  • Research and DIY: “how to unblock a drain”, “what is a heat pump”
  • Wrong service: “carpet cleaning machine hire” when you offer cleaning
  • Wrong place: town names you do not serve

Add each irrelevant theme as a negative keyword. If more than a quarter of your spend goes to terms like these, tighten match types before doing anything else.

2. The ads show outside your service area

In campaign settings, check that location targeting uses Presence rather than Presence or interest. Then look at the Locations report to see where clicks actually came from. Exclude areas that cost money and never book.

3. The landing page loses people

A click is a visitor deciding in a few seconds whether to call. Check the page on a phone:

  • Does the headline match the search (“Same-day boiler repair in Leeds”)?
  • Is the phone number tappable at the top of the screen?
  • Is the form short: name, phone, postcode, what they need?
  • Is there visible proof: reviews, photos, accreditations?
  • Does it load quickly on mobile data?

Sending every ad to the homepage is one of the most common reasons for low conversion rates.

4. Leads are happening but not being tracked

Sometimes leads are coming in and Google Ads simply cannot see them. Typical causes:

  • The conversion fires on a thank-you page that the form never redirects to
  • The form plugin was changed and the trigger stopped working
  • Calls are not tracked at all, so phone-heavy businesses look like they get nothing
  • The Google tag is installed twice, or not on every page

Use Google Tag Assistant to submit a test enquiry and confirm exactly one conversion fires. Our guide on tracking calls, forms, bookings and WhatsApp leads covers each case.

5. Bidding is optimising for the wrong thing

If the account uses Maximise Conversions while the “conversion” is a button click or a page view, Google will find more people who click buttons. Fix tracking first, then move to conversion-based bidding with the right primary conversion actions.

A quick diagnostic

SymptomMost likely cause
High CTR, very low conversion rateLanding page or search terms
Leads in the CRM but none in Google AdsTracking
Many short calls, few bookingsCall duration threshold or wrong audience
Good leads, then a sudden dropA tag or form changed on the site

Next step

If you have checked these and still cannot see where the money goes, a Google Ads audit reviews search terms, settings, landing pages and tracking together, so you fix the cause rather than the symptom.
